Brass 80-20

Materialalloy of copper 80% and zinc 20%, low brass
StandardASTM B134
GradeC24000 (CuZn20)
Main properties and applicationlow brass 80-20 alloy is well machinable, relatively strong, easily polished, well soldered, highly thermally conductive, has antifriction properties; brass grade 80-20 is quite well welded by various types of welding, including gas and arc welding in a shielding gas environment; one of the distinctive operational properties of bronze and brass is that sparks are not created upon impact and friction of a solid sieved against copper alloys, therefore a brass wire mesh is used in flammable and explosive environments, when sifting materials in cases where it is necessary to avoid sparking
Operating temperaturemelting point about 905°C; annealing temperature 500÷650°C; the alloy retains ductility and does not become brittle when cooled down to helium temperatures
Grade analogueCW503L; CDA 240; brass 80/20
Density8,7 g/cm3
Corrosion resistancecorrosion-resistant alloy in air (including maritime climate), in fresh and sea water, in dry halogen gases, in dry steam, in antifreezes, alcohols, freons; brand 80-20 is relatively stable in alkalis; brass mesh, as well as meshes from other brands of brass, is unstable in wet saturated steam, mine waters, oxidizing solutions, chlorides, mineral acids, hydrogen sulfide, fatty acids, in an environment containing sulfur dioxide or ammonia; brass mesh should not be used in contact with iron, aluminum and zinc due to contact corrosion, leading to its rapid destruction

Low Brass CuZn20 -- alloy for special purpose

Low Brass CuZn20 is an alloy in demand in the industry, which lends itself well to pressure treatment, especially in a cold state. Rolled semi-finished products are made from brass of this brand:

• sheets;
• stripes;
• wire;
• tapes;
• pipes.

Brass 80-20: composition and characteristics

Low brass CuZn20 (C24000 grade) is one of the alloys used in industry. This brass consists of 80% copper and 20% zinc with small additions of lead and iron. Compared with copper, brass has better abrasion resistance, hardness and tensile strength. C24000 brass also has improved corrosion resistance and lower electrical conductivity. The zinc content makes copper alloys more ductile, strong and durable. Thus low brass 80-20 is weaker and less ductile than cartridge brass 70-30, yellow brass 65-35 and muntz brass 60-40. Compared to phosphor bronzes, CuZn20 brass is a softer material.

Operational properties of low brass:

  1. The alloy is well processed and formed: amenable to plastic deformation, cold and hot pressure treatment. Used for the production of small parts.
  2. Brass 80-20 is not subject to seasonal cracking: deformation when used in a humid atmosphere is a common problem for alloys with a zinc content above 20%.
  3. Excellent weldability: brass alloy can be processed with soft and hard solders, welded by arc and gas welding.
  4. Wide operating temperature range: Brass can easily withstand temperatures below -200°C. The melting temperature of low brass is about 905°C. The alloy does not become brittle, retains ductility.
  5. Corrosion resistance: the structure of the material is not destroyed in the air, sea and fresh water, carbon dioxide solutions, alcohol, freon and antifreeze.
  6. Brass does not spark due to mechanical friction: the use of brass surfaces is safe in contact with flammable and explosive substances.

When using products made of brass, contact with iron, zinc and aluminum should be avoided. Brass is also unstable when used in chlorides, hydrogen sulfide, fatty and mineral acids.

Main utilizing of brass

Brass CuZn20 is a demanded material for the production of rolled metal products. Brass alloy is rolled into wire, strips, sheets and other metal semi-finished products. Brass wire is the most popular rolled metal product, used for the manufacture of meshes, which are used in construction and the pulp and paper industry.

Brass is used to make musical wind instruments and accessories for them, for example, reeds for saxophones. Brass is used for the production of bellows, corrugated tubes, flexible hoses and gauge tubes.

Due to the fact that the material is easy to work with pressure and looks attractive, brass is used for the manufacture of decorative elements, souvenirs, details for decorating the interior and facades of buildings. The attractive cost and excellent performance characteristics of brass make this alloy so popular.
